So just where did Mother's Day come from?
Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday is a tradition that dates
back as far as ancient Greece. The evolution of the festival has been linked to
the Christian calendar, whereby the fourth Sunday of Lent was given over to honour
one's mother and to celebrate the Virgin Mary (mother of Jesus). On this day,
as the tradition goes, small gifts are given and the 'usual' chores a 'mother'
does are carried out by another member of the household (usually the father or
the children).
Modern day Mothering Sunday is said to be attributed to Anna
Jarvis, from Virginia, USA. Anna Jarvis established 'Mother’s Day in the USA in
1912, placing it firmly on the calendar on the second Sunday in May. Where the
US goes, the world follows and so what is now called Mother’s Day has become a
worldwide tradition. Anna Jarvis herself has become amazed by the successful
commercial adaptation nicknamed the occasion a 'Hallmark Holiday' in respect of
the mass production of Mother's Day Cards by that particular company, produced
to celebrate the day.
